Kwon's Karate

I tried Kwon's Karate, located at 8 Hillcrest Avenue in Manhasset under a one day pass I received by enetering my information on the company's web site (www.kwonskarate.com).

The studio teaches a traditional form of Martial Arts called Moo Duk Kwan.

Group exercise: There are two adult classes offered in the morning on Tues and Thurs (10:30-11:20) and Saturday (11:30-12:30) and four evening classes M-Thurs 7:30-8:30pm.

Cool feature: when first starting out you will be provided with a series of one-on-one lessons to get the basic technique down.

The bad: The place looks nothing like the pictures on the web site, its old, dank and dirty.

The price: Whether chosing a one month committment or paying month-to-month, the cost of the adult program is $159/month (with $100 initiation fee, but not clear if they are enforcing that). This entitles you to as many sessions as you would like per week.

Top Gun Karate

I tried Top Gun Karate (http://www.tgkarate.com/), located at 1170 Northern Blvd, in Manhasset under a one week pass that I received in a local mailer.

The studio teaches an Isreali form of self-defense called Krav Maga. The studio is large, modern and clean and the staff is very friendly and helpful.

Group Exercise: There are 12 classes available for adults each week: 3 fitness classes (Tues and Thurs 9:30-10:30am and Fri 10-11am) and 8 Krav Maga classes (Mon, Wed, and Fri mornings 10-11am, Mon-Thurs evenings 8:15-9:15pm and Sat 9:30-10:20am. The fitness classes (cardio kickboxing and cardio sculpt) are well attended, but not crowded, and provide a great workout. The Krav Maga classes are oriented toward self-defense, enable a lot of personal attention, and provide a great workout.

Amenities: none, no showers, just a bathroom. But the staff is super nice and helpful.

The price: not a lot of flexibility. At the time of my trial, they were offering a 6 month membership for $1065 upfront or an initial fee of $195 and six monthly payments of $145. Despite the limited options, they do enable you to freeze your membership if your schedule prevents you from attending for a period of time.

Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center

I tried the JCC's group exercise program (www.sjjcc.org/fitness) under a one week pass that was advertised in a local mailer I received.

Group Exerciese: The center has a rather small, old group fitness studio, a spin room and pool and offers 47 classes Sunday-Friday (no classes on Saturdays), including mornings, some afternoons and evenings. I found some of the teachers less than inspiring, especially "Bill" who not only repeats the same movements over and over, but doesn't actually demonstrate proper form and does not actually perform the exercises himself. He is also not the model of physical fitness. I tried Absolute Conditioning, Bosu Blast, Total Body Sculpt, Buff Bodies, and Core Body Sculpt and found all the classes rather basic and unexciting. But overall got a good workout.

Amenities: The showers look very new and clean. There is no towel service, but you can borrow one sweat towel. Shampoo, conditioner and body wash are available in the showers and there is one hair dryer available.
